An Open Home Changing Lives

In a vulnerable neighborhood in Lima, something special happens every week at Lucila’s home. Chairs are arranged in the living room, conversations begin, and little by little teenagers from Jicamarca arrive—bringing curiosity, laughter, and plenty of questions. What brings them together is simple but powerful: discovering stories from the Bible through a Discovery Bible Study (DBS).

Lucila is the mother of three daughters and chose to open her home even while facing her own challenges. Her youngest daughter, Lucero, has Down syndrome and needs a third surgery to help improve her speech. Yet instead of holding her back, this situation has only strengthened Lucila’s desire to serve. Her home continues to be a safe place where young people can gather, learn, and find hope.

What began as simple gatherings to read the Bible has grown into something much bigger. Discovery Bible Study has been spreading across Peru because it is simple and participatory. People read Scripture together, reflect on it, and discover how to apply it in their daily lives. Because of its simplicity, these groups have multiplied in homes and schools.

Along the way, an unexpected tool emerged: theater. For many of these young people, acting out a Bible story helps them understand it in a deeper way. It’s more than performing—it’s an experience that builds confidence, strengthens identity, and creates a sense of belonging within a safe environment.

Recently, a group of teenagers from Túpac Amaru School had the opportunity to perform the story of Job at the National Library of Peru. For many of them, it was an unforgettable moment. As they later shared, portraying that story changed the way they see faith and the challenges of life.

The DBS movement within Reflejo began when a small group of new believers and volunteers gathered to study the Bible with parents. Over time, what started as a small meeting began to grow and multiply. Today, partnerships have been established with several schools, and many homes have opened their doors for these gatherings.

In places where violence, suicide, and drugs once seemed like the only options for many young people, there are now spaces where they can hear God’s Word, ask honest questions, and discover a new path forward. Many have placed their faith in Jesus and are experiencing real transformation in their lives.

Through DBS 17:17, young people and families are starting new groups in schools and homes, bringing hope to their own neighborhoods and communities.

You can be part of this story too.
Please pray for these young people, for the volunteers walking alongside them, and for the homes that open their doors to share God’s Word. Every prayer, every act of support, and every new group helps more people discover Jesus and find hope for their lives.
